The Hound Of The Baskervilles Essay Mr and Miss Stapleton claim to be brother and sister and as they live in Merripit House. These are some of the prime suspects as they lived right near Sir Charles- or now sir Henry. At first they seem pleasant folk although when Watson first meets them Mr Stapleton becomes distracted at one point and Miss Stapleton thinking Watson is Sir Henry Baskerville warns him at there first introduction. Even though Holmes knew all along Watson only found out near the end when Holmes told him that Mr and Miss Stapleton werent brother and sister they were married, but Watson must have got the impression before hand because Sir Henry in the end fell in love with Miss Stapleton but every time they went to meet etc Mr Stapleton was always there. As we know Mr Stapleton killed Sir Charles with his hound and he nearly got away with it if it werent for Watson and Sherlock Holmes. Throughout this Miss Stapleton was helpless because when she was going to try and stop the killing of Sir Henry, Mr Stapleton tied her up so she was totally helpless. This creates suspense throughout the novel, as no one knows if they really are what they say they are. Mr and Mrs Barrymore were suspects in this as they were Sir Charles servants and Watson found out while he was staying with Sir Henry that Barrymore went to a room every few nights and gave a signal. In the end they followed Mr Barrymore and found out that the escaped convict on the moor was Mrs Barrymores brother and they were signalling to him so they could go out and give him food. Eventually the hound killed Seldon as he was mistaken for Sir Henry as he was wearing some of his old clothes Mrs Barrymore had given him. Mrs Laura Lyons father is Mr frankland but because she married without his consent he wouldnt have anything to do with her. Sir Charles and her were very close; he helped Laura and lent her money. Laura fell in love with Mr Stapleton though as she thought he wasnt married, he tricked her into saying to sir Charles to meet her at 10 oclock instead Mr Stapleton went there with the hound and Sir Charles died. A few clues were Sherlock Holmes and Watson got all this information from is from a missing boot which was used by Mr Stapleton to find Sir Henry on the moor because it had his scent, Talking to Miss Laura Lyons a lot and obviously there general Knowledge. In conclusion to Conan Doyles- Hound of the Baskervilles I think it was a good book with lots of ups and downs and a whole load of suspense and Dramatic Tension.

I decided to write my paper on Mill for two main reasons. The first deals with happiness and virtue and his take on these things. I would first off like to state my disagreements with his ideas and then I will speak of my agreements. Mill contends that a less intelligent individual can not be as happy as one with a greater intellectual capacity. He also states that you would not be happy as swine even if everything you desired was given. I disagree. I feel that if you do not know of what you do not have then you cannot miss it. If we were less intelligent then we would be more content with the more primal needs that our ancestors had. If their needs were met then they were happy. Can we say the same for ourselves? Even if I had everything I ever wanted I could not be as happy as a caveman who had a mate, good hunting grounds and a full stomach. They had no one to worry about except protecting their clan. Yet we as a more civilized culture have much more to concern ourselves with. We must not only worry about ourselves and our families but also our neighbors and communities. If a caveman was considered virtuous it was because he was a good protector and provider and could be relied upon by his clan, yet for a man to now be considered virtuous it takes almost the same but this goal is much harder to achieve. I do feel like Mill that to live virtuously is a goal that we should all strive to attain and like him I believe that these acts will not bring about happiness as an end but by acting in such a manner will contribute to your overall happiness exponentially. I also like the fact that that if something should bring about your happiness then it is ok to try and achieve it such as money. He does not say it is wrong to try and get as much money as you can and he says it is ok if it is a means to an end for bringing you happiness. Money will buy many of our desires and wishes and for many it is there main goal in life and yet for others obtaining the money itself is there goal. That alone will bring them happiness as it is there driving force and having enough will satisfy them. This in many occasions will make the person noxious to others but not always. We should look at this then that to try and achieve a lot of money but not become noxious and still trying to live virtuously would be a cceptable. That is not necessarily everyone’s goal who hopes to acquire... ... say I do not care if my child is sick and needs to go to the doctor I want a new pair of shoes and do not have enough money to do both? No it is unthought-of (At least for those with any morals or virtues). These are simple to deduct but what about when we face times of war? Who decides who is sacrificed then? Is it right of them to make such decisions? I say yes. If we have placed these people in a position of authority then they have that right because we have placed our trust in them to act in a manner that will be for the good of our community. It then becomes our right to make this sacrifice. If we do not then someone else must take our place. Then we have not only acted wrongly but we have shirked our duty to our community and placed someone else’s life at risk for our own cowardice or selfishness. Therefore the good of the community should be sacrificed for, and those in charge should be able to make those decisions based on the trust we placed in them when they re ceived those positions. I will sum this up by stating that living virtuously, morally and by willing to sacrifice for the greater good sum up most of Mill’s philosophy all of which I agree with wholeheartedly.

First Day in Delta College Essay

January, 14th 2014, was my first day at Delta College. I have heard some say that their first day of college was full of excitement, but for me it was completely new experience. My first day in Delta College was a memorable experience due to three reasons: I was exposed to the new environment, I met new teachers, and I met some new friends. On the first day of college, I saw the new environment and it made me feel more and more comfortable. At my first glimpse of my new campus, the air smelled new, the faces looked new and the environment seemed so different from Cambodia (my country) that it took away my anxieties. As my new friends, Theara, Sok, Samdy, and I roamed around, visiting every Delta College building, following the map. We saw awesome facilities support by high technology in the auto shop and we didn’t even know what it was called. All I know about it was that some of these machines were used it to fix cars. It was my first time seeing those amazing technologies. I t might sound that it was just ignorance in my new world, but it just really seemed new to me. These great experiences in the new environment helped me to adjust to Delta College as well. My first teacher for my English 84 class was named Becerra-Qu, and my second teacher for my Precalculus I class was named Tripp, R. At first they seemed so serious, but it was just the way their teaching styles were, which I found very helpful with my education. Then later on, my new friend told me that both teachers were nice people, but they just wanted their students to take their classes seriously. My friend also said, â€Å"They look serious and mean but they also make joke around and make the students felt more comfortable to study in their classroom.† She told me that â€Å"Every teacher has his or her own ways to teaching because some students tend to not to pay attention to their teachers if they don’t set up their rules in his or her classroom.† My first day of college was kind of scary but after my friend told me some stories about the teacher, it made me feel better. On my first day in Delta College, I made a couple new friends’ named Theara, Sok, Sam, Samdy, Vuth and I found them worth having. At the start, all of those new faces made me feel uncomfortable because they were looking at me as if I were an interesting creature that they had never seen before. My first hour at Delta College made me feel lonely and miserable. During the first hour, I realized that I missed the majority of my old friends in my country, whether they were nice or rude to me. On my first day in Delta College, I remembered all of those good old days with my good old friends and all the good old memories that I spent with them in Cambodia. However, things went back to normal as if I had returned to my old life after I had my first English 84 classes at 8:30 in the morning. English 84 class was nice and I met some new classmates there, named Theara, Sok, Sam, Samdy, and Vuth. We all spoke Khmer, and they all came from the same country as I did; however, we all came from different provinces. Some of my new classmates that I met on my first day of school have been friends of mine since that first day. Most importantly, as I was Cambodian, I had a hard time to read, to write, and to listen to my classmates including the teacher. Most of students that studied in English 84 with me didn’t speak English in a correct way. So, on my first day in my English 84 class, I always spoke broken English. When my first English 84 class was over at 10:30, I started to walk down to Shima building and stopped to ask someone I met for directions to my math class. I actually arrived to the class late because I got lost in the Shima building. In addition, when I got to my Math class fifteen minutes late, it was terrible and I didn’t get what the teacher said at first because he was speaking too fast for me, so I just found my own seat and settled down in the Math class for one hour and a half. It was a big challenge for me to go to college because I came from another country, but it gave me a memorable experience that I will never forget. Overall, I believe that the first day of College was an exciting journey because of all the new things that we had been through and experienced. For me, my first day in Delta College turned out to be terrible experience that I had never expected, but was a step that boosted my interesting and also my  confidence.

After watching both â€Å"Waiting for Superman† at home and â€Å"Race to Nowhere† in class, a lot of conclusions can be made from both incredibly made documentaries. Both films offered their audience the opportunity to be informed about the problems and issues in contemporary American education, both clearly with two completely different points of view. â€Å"Waiting for Superman† and â€Å"Race to Nowhere† were both created in 2010, and here and now in 2015, major issues in the United States surrounding education include curriculum, funding, and control. In regards to both films, â€Å"Waiting for Superman† includes the issue of how much the education in America has declined in regards to public schools and â€Å"Race to Nowhere† is about the everyday stress factor of students that are in school. Both documentaries were completely different with the issues they chose to address in the films, but both also brought about the right message whe n it comes to an end. Starting with â€Å"Race to Nowhere†, I personally sympathized with this story of students who are so stressed when it comes to schoolwork. My high school did not supply us with much homework as this story describes, however I was always stressed about assignments so I physically cannot even imagine being that surrounded by homework.
